Amirabdollahian had arrived in Cape Town on Thursday in response to an invitation from Naledi Pandor, the South African foreign minister, and departed for Tehran on Saturday.
During the visit, he delivered a speech at the ministerial meeting of BRICS which was also attended by some non-member countries including Iran.
The speech outlined Iran's policies on multilateralism and the country’s interest in joining the bloc.
Amirabdollahian also met and held discussions during the trip with foreign ministers of Russia, India, South Africa, and Brazil as part of Iran’s efforts to engage with the BRICS members.
The top diplomat also had meetings with his counterparts from the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia to strengthen Iran’s neighbor-orientated foreign policy, with a focus on expanding bilateral relations in economic and political areas.
At a press conference, Amirabdollahian said that the five member states of the BRICS group, Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, have declared their support for Iran’s membership in the bloc.
